Gas and electric dryers both push hot, moist, lint-loaded air through the same 4-inch rigid or semi-rigid duct to the same style of exterior hood. What changes is what happens when that duct plugs up: an electric dryer creates a fire and efficiency problem, while a gas dryer creates a fire, efficiency and combustion-gas problem.
Why a blocked gas dryer vent is a carbon monoxide concern
A gas dryer burns natural gas to make heat, and the products of that combustion — including carbon monoxide — leave the appliance through the exhaust duct along with the lint and water vapour. There is no separate flue. If the run is packed with lint or the exterior flap is frozen shut, that exhaust has nowhere to go but back into the laundry room.
This matters more here than in milder parts of Canada. In a Grande Prairie or Sexsmith winter, a dryer venting at -30°C throws off a plume of steam that condenses and freezes on the hood. - No plastic or vinyl flex. Rigid metal for the run; a short listed metal connector at the appliance.
