How Often Should You Clean Your Dryer Vent in Alberta?

Once a year for a typical household — and every six to twelve months if your dryer works hard. That is the short answer, and for most Alberta homes it is the right one. The longer answer depends on how much laundry you run, what kind of laundry it is, and how your vent is built.

Why Alberta shortens the interval

The general once-a-year guidance you will see from appliance makers and fire-safety agencies assumes average use. Northern Alberta is not average. From October to April nothing line-dries, so a Peace Region household concentrates a year's worth of drying into the cold months — and cold is exactly when vents clog fastest, because warm moist exhaust hits a frozen exterior hood, condenses, and binds lint into a damp plug. If you are in Grande Prairie or anywhere north of it, treat annual cleaning as the floor, not the target.

Shorten the interval if any of these apply

• Big family or daily loads. Lint production scales directly with cycles run.
• Pets. Fur dramatically increases what the lint screen misses.
• Heavy fabrics. Towels, bedding, fleece, and workwear — farm coveralls especially — shed far more than street clothes.
• Long or complicated vent runs. Second-floor laundry, roof terminations, or anything over about twenty-five feet with multiple elbows traps lint at every bend.
• Gas dryer. The interval is not different, but the stakes are: a blocked vent can push combustion byproducts, including carbon monoxide, back into the living space, so err early.
• Rental property. Tenants rarely report slow drying; clean on the calendar, not on complaints.

Do not wait for symptoms — but know them
